SUBJECT:        Emergency Suspension of Dimethyl Tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA),Trade Name Dacthal

As of August 7, 2024, U.S. EPA published an emergency order to suspend the registration of pesticide products containing dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA), also known as chlorthal-dimethyl. DCPA is a selective pre-emergent herbicide used for weeds primarily in brassica and onion crops in California. Dacthal Flowable Herbicide, US EPA Reg. No. 5481-487-AA, is the only product currently registered for use in California.

The emergency order is effective immediately due to U.S. EPA’s determination that continued use, sale, or distribution of DCPA would pose an imminent hazard.

The following, in summary, are key points of the Emergency Order:

  • No person in any state may distribute, sell, offer for sale, hold for sale, ship, or deliver any pesticide product with the active ingredient DCPA. The emergency order allows for the express return to the registrant.
  • U.S. EPA is not allowing use of existing stock.

To dispose of existing stock of DCPA, utilize the Very Small Quantity Generator Program by contacting an inspector with the Hazardous Materials Program (CUPA) at (650) 372-6200 for an appointment.
