ARTIST OPPORTUNITY

Youth Services Center Mural, San Mateo, CA. – DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 28, 2024, by 5:00pm PDT.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The County of San Mateo County (County) is seeking an experienced Bay Area-based (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties) teaching mural artist to guide youth residents aged 14-24 to paint a mural at the Youth Services Center in San Mateo.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Youth Services Center (YSC), which includes a juvenile detention facility, opened in September 2006. While at the YSC, youth can participate in many programming options, ranging from trauma-informed social and emotional learning programs to job readiness and life skills workshops to yoga and creative arts classes. Youth residents will design the mural before the artist enters into this contract. The teaching mural artist will support youth as they develop concepts and designs. The teaching mural artist will facilitate the transfer of the design(s) to the wall site and work with the residents to paint the mural.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY

Navigation Center Mural, Redwood City, CA. – Open April 24 - May 22, 2024, by 5:00pm PDT.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

San Mateo County is seeking to commission a local experienced teaching artist and/or team of artists to design a mural in an outdoor common space that reflects themes and images related to a sense of home, diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and stability at the Navigation Center in Redwood City.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Navigation Center provides safe temporary living spaces for individuals and couples experiencing homelessness along with intensive support services designed to help clients find and maintain stable housing. The accepted mural proposal will take into consideration feedback from Navigation Center staff and residents who will meet with the artist before execution of the project. The painting and installation of the mural will be done with resident participation.
