  • Redwood City – San Mateo County supervisors today voted to honor former Supervisor and County Sheriff Don Horsley, who died in November 2023 after a lifetime of public service, by naming a new park after him.

The new park will be named Don Horsley County Park at Tunitas Creek Beach.

“Under Don’s leadership, the County, Peninsula Open Space Trust and California State Coastal Conservancy partnered to secure $13.4 million to purchase the Tunitas Creek Beach property and to transform it into the County’s newest park, for both the betterment and enjoyment of San Mateo County’s residents and visitors and the conservation of the local flora and fauna,” said Warren Slocum, president of the Board of Supervisors.

“Owing to Don’s leadership and tireless efforts, the public will have access to Tunitas Creek Beach’s pristine, one-mile stretch of sandy beach, offering San Mateo County residents and visitors an opportunity to connect with the natural world and to enjoy unparalleled views,” Slocum said.

The beach is framed by sandstone cliffs easily visible from Highway 1. Yet the beach was not publicly accessible as surrounding land was in private hands. That did not stop many who created unsafe and environmentally damaging routes through private land and the creek, turning the beach into a destination for large, multi-night parties.

    Horsley had a different vision.

“If you have ever been out to this beach, this is one of the most beautiful beaches in the state,” said Supervisor Ray Mueller, who succeeded Horsley representing District 3, which encompasses the coast. “He would have been delighted to have his name associated with this beach he worked so hard to save for the people of San Mateo County, California.”

Work now underway includes an ADA-accessible pathway that will wind down to a mid-bluff area with picnic tables, interpretive panels, restrooms and tiered seating that offers panoramic views.

This is the 24th park within the San Mateo County Park system and its first recreational beach.

After serving 14 years as County Sheriff, Horsley served on the Board of Supervisors  from 2010 to 2023.  Learn more about the life and legacy of Don Horsley.
