Your answers will influence an ambitious mural project in North Fair Oaks
August 17, 2022
  • Redwood CityWhen you imagine a healthy community, what do you see?

School gardens? Streets that encourage leisurely outings? Safe and affordable housing? Parks? All of the above and more?

The County of San Mateo’s Office of Arts and Culture wants to know what images of healthy community should decorate a popular path in North Fair Oaks.

You can take a survey that will help influence a mural located along the path as Fifth Avenue travels under the Caltrain tracks. The mural will have 16 separate panels.

“What happens when community members come together for a shared purpose?  Voices are heard, beauty is created, and pride abounds in the community,” said Robin Rodricks, executive director of the County’s Office of Arts and Culture.

You can fill out an online survey until Sept. 30, 2022, in English here. The survey is available in Spanish here.

You may also find printed copies of the survey (in English and Spanish) at these locations:

    • Casa Circulo Cultural:  3090 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063
    • North Fair Oaks Library:  2510 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063
    • Fair Oaks Community Center:  2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063

Artists and artist teams interested in applying for the opportunity to create the mural are encouraged to learn about the project and the selection process. Details are posted on the Culture Collective of NFO website.

    Background
The “Healthy Community Mural Project” is a collaboration of three local organizations:

    • Office of Arts and Culture, County of San Mateo
    • Art Commission, County of San Mateo
    • Culture Collective of NFO/Colectivo Cultural de NFO

The community survey will help identify 16 Healthy Community topics for the project’s 16 mural panels.

After the survey is complete, two virtual community meetings will be held to further engage the community:

Nov. 17, 2022: Discussion of survey results and mural topics

Jan. 26, 2023: Artist presentations based on community input

The Board of Supervisors on July 26, 2022, allocated $60,000 for the Healthy Community Mural project to “bring pride and beauty to the North Fair Oaks community.” The funds come from the voter-approved Measure K half-cent sales tax.
