Redwood City, Calif. —The County of San Mateo today activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to support the local County Health response to the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19.

The EOC, housed in theCounty’s Regional Operations Center at County Center in Redwood City, provides a centralized location to coordinate resources and communication with other local and state governments, regional emergency services and community partners. The EOC will operate through Friday, March 6, at which time its need will be reassessed.

Earlier today, County Health reported that an adult resident of San Mateo tested presumptively positive for COVID-19 and the case if pending confirmatory testing by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). This brings the county’s total cases to two; an earlier case is an individualrepatriated to the United States by the CDC and currently in isolation. County Health is also actively monitoring other individuals based on CDC guidelines.

The EOC activation better allows the County to focus on staffing and resources while coordinating efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate its impacts.

“While the public risk of exposure to COVID-19 remains relatively low, the EOC framework helps us make sure that all our departments, cities and partners have the tools and flexibility to prioritize public safety,”said County Manager Mike Callagy.
