The Montara State Marine Protected Area (MPA) of the San Mateo County coast includes Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a special place of biological significance that draws thousands of visitors throughout the year. Knowing the proper way to visit an MPA will help you plan your visit and do your part to protect and conserve marine life and associated habitats. Visitor guidelines are set by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Drilling for oil off the coast of California has been something most people thought had been forbidden for decades. When the issue was recently revived as a possibility by the current federal government administration, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors decided to join almost every other California jurisdiction in fighting back against the idea. A resolution was approved unanimously at the Jan. 23 board meeting supporting a continuing ban on new offshore oil and gas drilling, fracking and other well stimulation in federal and state waters.

The Parks and Recreation Commission approved dog management policy recommendations presented at the December 7 meeting by the Dog Management Committee.

From October 3 through November 16, San Mateo County Parks received input on a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to restore and improve Flood Park via a form on the Parks website. The review period is now complete. All written comments regarding the adequacy of the Draft EIR were required to be submitted during this time period.
