In April 2019, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office received a whistle-blower complaint of public corruption against members of the executive leadership of the San Mateo County Community College District. The District operates three Colleges: Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The current Board of Trustees, through their outside counsel, Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw, Pittman, LLP., has been supportive of our efforts in obtaining records and conducting interviews of District personnel, assisting our investigation that has resulted in the filing of these felony charges. In December 2021, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office brought felony charges against former Vice Chancellor of Facilities Jose Nunez, who pled guilty to two felony violations of Education Code Section 7054 (Use of School Funds for Political Purposes) in January 2022.

Quarry Park Off-Leash Pilot Program Approved By Board of Supervisors

At its April 5, 2022 meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved the Department’s appeal to allow an off-leash dog pilot program to proceed at Quarry Park while upholding the Planning Commission’s denial of a Coastal Development Permit for the pilot program at Pillar Point Bluffs.

Grants Totaling $3.2 Million Target Student Learning Loss, Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Redwood City — The County of San Mateo today announced that a fresh wave of awarded grant funds will allow more than 2,500 local students to attend enrichment programs this summer. “This is a huge victory for a group that after two years of COVID really needs a win: students from families with low incomes,” said Don Horsley, president of the Board of Supervisors. “These grants will provide urgently needed opportunities for students whose families were typically hit the hardest financially during the pandemic.”

BOS to Hear Appeal of CDP for Off-Leash Dog Pilot April 5

On Feb 22, 2022 the Parks Department filed an appeal of the San Mateo County Planning Commission’s decision that denied the Department’s application for a Coastal Develop Permit (CDP) for off-leash dog pilot programs at Quarry County Park and Pillar Point Bluffs. The appeal requests to pursue a pilot program at Quarry Park only and not at Pillar Point Bluffs.

Investigation of Surplus Safety Equipment, Cleaning Supplies Finds Lack of Controls, Communication

Redwood City – An independent investigation into what caused the County of San Mateo to leave surplus COVID-19 safety equipment and cleaning supplies in the rain found internal controls lacking. A report released today concluded boxes containing primarily non-medical grade gowns, goggles and face shields, as well as cleaning supplies and a number of sterile gowns, were stacked outside without a definitive timeline for how the surplus safety equipment would be ultimately distributed.
