On September 16, 2024, work began on a project to enhance public safety by maintaining existing fuel breaks and shaded fuel breaks along a 4.3-mile network of fire roads in Sam McDonald Park.
Fuel breaks allow first responders access when containing fires and can slow the spread of fire. Maintenance of these fuel breaks requires creation of a minimum 5-foot vegetation clearance from either edge of roadway. Shrubs and small diameter trees will be thinned and ladder fuels removed within 50 feet of the road. Larger dead or dying trees that are in risk of falling and causing an obstruction for first responders will also be removed.
This project is part of the La Honda Fuel Break Project, funded by Cal Fire and implemented by San Mateo RCD, that envisions a strategic 19-mile circular fuel break surrounding the community of La Honda to reduce fire risk. It is also a high-priority project listed in the Parks Department’s 5-Year Wildfire Fuel Management Program.
